Some things, you have to find out yourself, some things, you read in a book or on some piece of paper - I loved that about Arx. I still don't think Arx is any more complicated than Morrowind for example, but definitely requires more digging. But newer than Arx just had a lot of tutorials and such, so you get used to having everything explained. I played it as a child and figured out a lot, since the release and I'm frequently returning to the game, currently speedrunning it. The thing about Arx Fatalis is that at the release, it was relatively simple game. That's already 2/3 of the runes required for one of the most OP spells in the game. Step back just as the enemy is about to hit you. Make sure to hold down attack (left mouse) long enough to fully charge your attacks (the diamond at the bottom of the screen should be as bright as possible). Of course that doesn't help when you want to get your first runes, but at the start of the game you can easily get by with just melee even if your character is not specced for physical combat: The manual does list all the non-Secret spells (the ones that will appear in your spell book once you have the runes) but you can also figure them out on your own once you know a couple by thinking of spells as sentences with the runes being words. If you bought the game on GOG.com you can also download the manual from there. You can download a PDF of the game's manual from Steam (does not require an Account):
